DJI will (probably) unveil its smallest drone yet on May 24

Drone maker DJI is holding an invite-only event in New York City on May 24. The details are scarce but it’s centered around the vague tagline “seize the moment.” In April, rumors of a new drone, Spark, surfaced on Chinese forums. DJI’s recent trademarks filings back up the claim, and if true, Spark could be DJI’s smallest consumer-based drone to date.

Without a doubt, DJI has secured the top position in the high-end drone market. The company’s Phantom is as much as a cultural icon for consumer drones. Lately, rival companies have explored drone niches that DJI hasn’t touched. The “selfie” drone for example.

Numerous companies are now offering camera drones that are easy to carry and launch on the go. Flying cameras like Hover, Dobby, and Breeze are smaller, cheaper than DJI’s popular Mavic. If the company wants to enter competing airspace, it’s probably set its sights on something much smaller.
