A home security system usually entails setting up a few cameras and a couple alarms around the house, and this approach to securing your home can be quite costly regardless of what company you go with. However, a startup from Dallas, Texas is approaching home security systems in a different, robotic way.
Orbii is a robotic ball that rolls around your house, patrolling for any running refrigerators, mischievous pets, or lurking intruders. The robot sports a 720p camera, a microphone, and a speaker so you can monitor your house in high definition and listen out for anything. You drive Orbii around using a smartphone or tablet app, and it works from any distance by connecting to your home’s wireless network. Video is streamed to the app and is saved locally on the device or in a secure cloud server.
Orbii is entirely remote control. It’s certainly more hands-on than a set-and-forget security system like Nest Cam, but the startup building Orbii says that machine learning is in development. The robotic ball may be able to learn its way around the house, autonomously mapping rooms as it’s on patrol.
Inside Orbii itself is a Sphero robotic ball, and it’s what gives Orbii the push to roll around. So technically, Orbii isn’t even a robotic ball but a shell housing a camera instead. In all fairness, the company states that the current Orbii is a prototype, and it’s expected that the Sphero won’t be the chosen component for the final product.
A few quirks of Orbii worth mentioning are as follows. A one hour battery life is expected, and Orbii can’t roll itself back to the wireless charging dock. However, you can tilt, pan, and live stream video from Orbii when its charging. Orbii only records video when it’s upright and facing forward, and this prevents any shaky footage when Orbii is rolling about. Multiple units are needed for a multistory house as Orbii can’t go upstairs or downstairs. Lastly, Orbii isn’t a total replacement for a home security system but rather an added layer of security.
Orbii the robot-housing shell with a camera has garnered over $16,000 on Indiegogo and is rolling towards its $35,000 goal. You can reserve Orbii for the early bird price of $139, which is quite cheap considering Sphero is around the same price.
