Double, the flagship iPad-toting telepresence robot from Double Robotics, hasn’t changed its appearance much since inception. The company has focused solely on office environments where Double is primarily used as a robotic surrogate for those who don’t want to step foot in the office, but Double Robotics has revealed a new rig for something a bit more wild: 360-degree video.
Double Robotics’ new rig converts the Double into a 360-degree video dolly, and it’s perfect for film aficionados that want to capture immersive video without laying hands on the camera itself. The rig isn’t a brand-spanking new camera, and instead, it’s a universal camera mount that attaches any existing 360-degree camera up to five pounds on Double.
Double’s upgrade doesn’t call for a design overhaul. The robot works the same as before; Double still needs a device mounted to the front of it for pilot viewing and another device for controls. It works wirelessly over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and LTE.
The 360 Camera Dolly package (that’s what Double Robotics calls it) sports a Double 2 robot, universal camera mount, and a travel case for a whopping $3000. If you so happen to have a Double 2, you can buy the universal camera mount for $250 instead and still experience 360-video.
