Bratwurst-Grilling Robot Is The Epitome Of German Engineering

Craving bratwurst? Lucky you, ze Germans have engineered a bratwurst-grilling robot designed to grill sausages without any human help.

The aptly named BratWurst Bot made its debut at an event in Berlin earlier this month. Made from shelf robotic components and equipped with a culinary hat, a pair of tongs, and a gas grill, the BratWurst Bot grilled and served 200 sausages.

FZI, the non-profit research center behind the robot, claims the sausage robot can grill autonomously. Guests simply place their order via tablet and “the ordered bratwurst appeared in a queue on the tablet with the name of the guest and the remaining preparation time.” In addition, a quirky “tablet-based chef face behind the robot interacted with the guests.” The robot wiggled its digital mustache and spoke German tongue, saying things like “heiss und fettig” which means “hot and greasy.”

Each sausage was localized with the help of one of the two RGB cameras, and an algorithm that subtracted the background kept tabs on sausage placed on the grill. FZI notes the changing color of sausages was a challenge. But that didn’t stop the BratWurst Bot from dishing out the sausages.
